Franciscan is once again available. The Friar is used as the small caps for Franciscan and aligns with the Franciscan. This provides for some very elegant typesetting.

5.5 line font contains 20 lowercase 'a's and other characters proportionate to common English usage, plus punctuation, ligatures, and dipthongs. This is a new casting from Dale Guild done in late 2008. Franciscan is available only in 16 pt. In Mac McGrew's American Metal Type Faces of the 20th Century, he states that "Franciscan is the redesigned and recut Aries face of Frederic W. Goudy, renamed in 1932 by Edwin Grabhorn, an eminent San Francisco printer, who used it for several distinctive and award-winning books. Monotype made mats from the types cast by Goudy for private use of the California printer, calling the design Goudy Franciscan." This current cutting of mats for Franciscan was done by Allen Waring and Theo Rehak of the Dale Guild and the type is cast from foundry matrices in hard ATF metal on Barth casting machines.
